THE HISTORY OF AIR CONDITIONING – IT IS PRETTY “COOL”!

Isn't it hilarious with the passing of every generation and the immersion of another there always seems to be one saying that continues forward... "Back in my day...". This is usually followed by some kind of horrific tasks like walking to school in the snow or a potential guilt trip to the younger generations about the use of technology.

Well, just like everything else, the evolution of the AC unit has made monumental steps forward from generation to generation, each evolving to make the next group of whippersnappers more and more comfortable. Which in reality we should all be grateful for these technological advances because let's be honest no one wants to see their grandpa in his boxer briefs trying to cool himself off by standing in the freezer over summer anymore, right?

Here are Ten interesting, fun facts about Air Conditioning!

  1. When AC systems were first being produced, the output settings were measured by "Ice Power." It was an estimated guess on how many blocks of ice the unit would need to produce the same amount of cooling power.

  2. The first air conditioner was not used for comfort. In 1902 Willis Carrier worked for a publishing company. Carrier decided one summer he was tired of his paper expanding and his ink being too runny to publish. His invention created a new industry and was the foundation for the modern-day air conditioning systems that we have today.

  3. The first fully air-conditioned house was built in Minneapolis in 1913 by a man named Charles Gates.

  4. Herbert Hoover was the first President of the United States of America to utilize air conditioning. He is known to have spent a whopping $30,000 on the AC unit.

  5. The first common items that people used to keep cool were hand fans. Electric fans became the more popular and effective choice in the United States during the early 1900s.

  6. One of the first big businesses to use AC was movie theaters. We all know the term "Summer Blockbuster," right? This started because it was rumored that the theater was the coldest place in town, so movie producers saved their biggest movies when they knew all would flock to the theater to see a movie.

  7. Air Conditioning units helped explode the population rates in places like Texas, Florida, and Arizona.

  8. The first car that had air conditioning was available in 1939 by the company known as Packard. It didn't sell a whole lot because of how expensive it was.

  9. AC units were a status of your success in the 1950s. After World War 2, window units had become so popular that they sold over 1 million units in 1953.

  10. We are in the year 2020! AC units are continuing to evolve. Many models now offer "greener" technology systems that can save you money and provide your home with energy smart, clean, cool air!

No one can be more grateful for the technological advances of these AC units than the people living in the “Valley of the Sun.” From ice blocks to “green’ energy efficient air, we as a people have come a long way from the days of having to pay your younger sibling to fan you with a palm tree branch.
