Why do you need to check your water pressure?
Not only can low water pressure be bad, but high water pressure can cause just as much damage, but without a lot of the indicators that there may be a problem. If your water pressure is too high, it can cause damage to the pipe connections, faucets, and things like your washing machine. These damages can lead to leaks and possibly a disastrous flood in your home. Monitoring your water pressure can save you thousands in the long run.
How to Test It
It is more simple than you might think. All you need is a very inexpensive water gauge that most hardware stores will have. Look for one with a female port that can connect to an outside faucet, one that will be able to connect tightly to the water source.
Make sure all water is turned off inside and outside the house. Make sure the faucet you're testing is the only place where water is being dispersed so that it will give an accurate reading.
Connect the gauge to the outside of your house; closer to the water meter the better.
Make sure the gauge is tight, there should be no water leaking when you turn on the water.
Check the reading. Typically 50 psi is suitable for most people, but anything between 40 psi and 60 psi will do.
If the water pressure is below the 40-psi mark or higher than 75 psi, it is a clear sign that something could be wrong.
What do I do if it is too high?
Install a water pressure regulator. It will regulate your water psi pressure to a maximum of about 75 psi. This can ensure a little more peace of mind. Even if you have one that has been installed, it is still a good idea to regularly check your water pressure due to the fact that at times these regulators could fail to work.
**As a side note: Phoenix plumbing code requires a pressure reducer to be installed if the pressure exceeds 80 psi.
What do I do if it too low?
Check your water pressure regulator. If you need to increase your water flow, you can adjust the regulator to hit that desired 50 psi. If you have a water pressure regulator and it seems to be working, it may be your water company delivering low water pressure to your home.
What do I do if it is right?
Relax and enjoy it! You will have a better night's sleep, knowing your house is not going to be flooded when you wake up. And when you step in that shower, it will be strong and refreshing, perfect for starting your morning off right. Don't get too comfortable though, it is still recommended to check every few months.
