What to do with that Bacon Grease?

Most people put all sorts of stuff down the drain, from cooking oils to banana peels or medicine. But some things just don’t belong there, unless you want to have serious plumbing issues and expensive repairs. Now repeat after me: the sink’s drain is not a garbage hole.

That being said, before you dispose of something else that might force you to call the plumber, check out this blog about what Animal Fat can do to your pipes!

Animal Fat/Grease

Tossing that lovely greasy substance into the kitchen sink drain after frying some bacon or sausages, seems harmless. But it is far from it. “The problem is that the water and grease cool as [they] move through the pipes and solidify, attracting other debris and creating a blockage,” says Arizona-based plumber Mark Stevens with Forrest Anderson Plumbing and Air Conditioning.

Not only does the fat stick to the pipes and causes blockages but it can also turn rancid and release nasty smells.

What If I Already Poured Grease Down the Drain?

If you’re reading this blog after the fact, there are a few preventative actions you can take to reduce the damage. Pour a gallon of boiling water slowly down the drain while you run the faucet on the hottest temperature setting. While you do this, squirt dish soap down the drain. The hot water should re-liquefy any solid grease, and the soapy water should hopefully carry it out of the pipes.

What if That Doesn’t Fix the Problem?

If you’ve been pouring grease down your drain for years, then you might need professional help (and an additional slap on the wrist). This grease is likely holding on to debris that is clogging your pipes and requires professional cleaning. Luckily Forrest Anderson Plumbing and Air Conditioning, Inc. has trained staff that can help you diagnose the problem and hopefully clear those plugged pipes.
