Bathroom Plumbing Fixtures for Remodeling a Home

Attitude is everything when you’re remodeling a home. It’s exciting and rewarding, but it can be scary and frustrating. With a bit of planning, you’ll be able to avoid potential problems when remodeling a home.

HGTV says “Plumbing fixtures are the main event” when remodeling bathrooms. When renovations include kitchens or bathrooms, there are plenty of things to consider.

Here are a few tips to help you choose bathroom plumbing fixtures when remodeling a home:

6 Tips for Choosing Bathroom Fixtures

Sinks and faucets are among the last items you install when remodeling a home. “Rough plumbing” is first. It includes the plumbing behind the walls and how it is placed, which depends on the fixtures you choose. So you need to know what bathroom fixtures you want sooner, rather than later:

  • Decide on your look and feel – Rustic is “in;” modern is never out… What kinds of sinks, faucets, shower, or bath do you want? There are so many choices! Choose a theme in sync with you

  • Faucets should be focal points for sinks – Types of faucets include:

  1. Single-set – Usually centered; one faucet, one handle

  2. Two-handle centerset – The spout and handles are combined on one base

  3. Wall-mounted – Good for above-the-counter and freestanding sinks; easier to clean

  4. Wide-spread – Spout with separate hot/cold handles

  • Go with timeless style – An early-’90s general-contractor-installed bathroom has several “tells.” When remodeling a home, choose plumbing fixtures that will weather interior décor trends over time.

  • Materials for sinks – (Copper, stainless steel, etc.) Metals are expensive and high-maintenance. Glass looks good but can be fragile; marble can scratch. Vitreous china is the choice of traditional materials; it is affordable and durable.

  • Take your time – Choosing the right bathroom fixtures is more about time than money. Don’t rush, and you’ll find the sinks, tubs, and faucets you truly love at the best price.

  • Types of sinks – Traditional drop-in sinks are more cost-effective. Under-mount sinks are easy to clean. Also, consider:

  1. Vessel sinks are dramatic, and “integral sinks” (where the sink and the countertop are all-one-piece) are even more striking.

  2. Pedestal sinks don’t seem to go out of fashion, so they’re a good choice and a terrific option for small spaces.

  3. Sink-and-vanity combos are another space-saving choice.

Tub and Shower Fixtures

You can have a tub, a shower, or both. Most people want both in at least one bathroom. Showerhead choices include:

  • Body sprayer – Relaxing mist, rain shower, body massage, or combinations?

  • Mounting – Wall mount, hand-held, or a combination?

When remodeling a home, many choose to convert their bathtub/shower to shower-only. This is a good choice for space-challenged areas. In terms of re-sale, families with small children need bathtubs. At least one tub in the house is best.

Another choice is between prefabricated shower stalls and traditional, customized tile showers. If your bathtub doesn’t need replacement, you may consider a wall kit; the walls above the tub are covered with pre-fabricated panels. They can go over existing walls (if the walls are still in good shape) or bare studs and they look fine.

However, there’s no denying the look of luxury and sophistication ceramic tile showers bring to a bathroom. They cost more, and it shows.

Toilets for Comfort and Style

In the U.S., standard toilets are 14″-15″ but slightly taller (16″-18″) is more comfortable, especially for seniors. They work better for physically challenged (walker, wheelchair, etc.) people, too.

You can spend from $159 (Duravit) to $9,000 (Kohler). Toilets are available in a wide range of colors and styles; sleek-and-slim one-piece toilets require more manufacturing processes, making them more expensive. Check the Top Ten Thrones for 2019 to learn more.

Ventilation Considerations for Bath and Kitchen Renovations

Don’t forget the bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans. There aren’t many glamorous style options, but they are one of the most important considerations when remodeling a home. Look for better air movement with less noise.
